Abstract

Winter Olympics and spatial planning: between local territory and regional space. – Throughout Olympic history, the winter edition has undergone significant transformations in spatial dimensions, inducing a new critical perspective on the urban dimension. The contribution analyses the different spatial patterns of the Winter Olympic Games through statistical indicators aimed at a quantitative comparison. By studying the different spatial models, new hypotheses on the relationship between the Olympic venues and the urban fabric will be provided, providing valuable tools for evaluating the Olympic event on the reference territory. The spatial models allow Olympic urbanism to be considered an intangible asset for the post-Olympic phase. Therefore, the contribution analyses how creating new facilities will bring about some spatial changes that can catalyse new impacts on the internal connections of the city and the reference territory. Furthermore, the study aims to reflect the specific case of Turin 2006 to observe how the regional model has been transformed into a critical model for catalysing regional host city strategies.
